Antique tablecloth made from tussah silk (Antheraea pernyi). Label reads: "Antique tablecloth of tussah silk (Antheraea pernyi) made in China around the 1920s. The silk is hand-reeled and handwoven, and is the natural beige color. The piece is embroidered with spun mulberry silk (Bombyx mori). Purhcased by RIchard S. Peigler in November 2017 by mail-order from an internet seller in Pomona Park, Florida. Pieces like this (tableclothes, handkerchiefs) were imported by the thousands into the USA in the 1920s and 1930s. Tussah silk was commonly called Shantung silk or pongee in the USA and the UK in the first half of the 20th century. It measures 82 cm H 82 cm. Price paid: US$19.95".
