A dupatta (shawl) made from tasar silk (Antheraea paphia). The label reads: "Woman's dupatta (shawl) of tasar silk (Antheraea paphia = A. mylitta) that was handwoven in West Bengal. This is a vintage piece at least 20 to 30 years old, purchased by RIchard S. Peigler in January 2018 from an internet dealer in New Dehli, who sells vintage textiles. The tasar silk is the natural color. The kantha embroidery is typical of West Bengal textiles, but the piece is very unusual because it has hems all around; most Indian textiles have warp threads showing at each end, often braided into fringe, and open selvedge along each side." Handwritten on the backside of the label is "The red motifs are block printed, perhaps with stick lac or Morinda dye. Kantha stitching around these with black thread."
