A semi-formal winter hat from the Qing dynasty, typically worn by first rank officials. This velvet hat has a wide brim with a red tassel adorning the crown. A red round coral finial sits atop the tassels, which, according to Huangchao liqi tushi (皇朝禮器圖式) or “Illustrated Regulations of the Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Imperial Qing Dynasty”), means the wearer was a first rank official. The peacock feather (2005.5.621.3) is secured below the finial with a brass attachment.
