An album of 48 ink and watercolour drawings bound in blue silk-covered boards with silk ties. The drawings are done on laid paper, which have then been individually adhered into the album. Figures in the album include government officials, ordinary people, figures demonstrating local customs, methods of transportation, and individuals receiving punishment. This album, likely made for trade export, would have been painted and compiled by a European artist in China. As Westerners became more interested in Qing-era fashion, customs, flora, fauna and other minutiae of daily life, items such as this album and the Insect Album (2004.19.3) were in high demand in Europe. Clues that this album may have been painted by a Western artist include the English titles, the subtle but expressive faces of the figures, and the incorrect details in some of the drawings.
