Velika Pecina is a cave with 16 archaeological levels, ranging from Mousterian to Roman. The lower levels include stone tools from the denticulate Mousterian culture. Also presented is a dated Aurignacian hearth (33,850 +/- 520 BP) and a dated Gravettian industry (26,500 +/- 300 BP). Fossil hominid remains have been found at Velika Pecina. The most prominent of these is a frontal bone found beneath the Aurignacian layer, and therefore older than 33,000 years.
