Site Typerock shelter DescriptionA rock shelter inhabited by Cro-Magnon people which consists of two named localities: Abri Classique and Abri Marseilles. The first inhabitants of this site were contemporaneous with the artists at Font de Gaume, Altamira and Rouffignac. There are no cave paintings at Laugerie-Basse, but about 600 works of art have been recovered. Laugerie-Basse consists of three cultural layers: A (Magdalenian III), B (Magdalenian IV) and C (Magdalenian V/VI). The site is located 200m downstream from Laugerie-Haute and is perched slightly higher from the valley bottom, on a limestone bedrock platform. Abri Classique has been fully excavated by Abri Marseilles has not. The site is 100m from the Vézère river, and there are several minor springs closer to the shelter.
