Site Typerock shelter DescriptionA rock shelter in the Dordogne near Les Eyzies, France, which has yielded the richest Upper Palaeolithic sequence ever recorded. It starts with Upper Périgordian (Gravettian), followed by 'proto-Magdalenian', final Aurignacian, several rich layers of Early, Middle, and Late Solutrean, and finally by Early Magdalenian. A number of radiocarbon dates are available, in the range c 20,000-16,000 BC for Solutrean and Initial Magdalenian levels. Numerous springs rise in the surrounding area, less than 100m from the site. The site is divided into two sectors: the western and eastern sectors, which are separated by a large area of unexcavated deposits.
