A rock shelter in the Dordogne near Les Eyzies, France, which has yielded the richest Upper Palaeolithic sequence ever recorded. It starts with Upper Périgordian (Gravettian), followed by 'proto-Magdalenian', final Aurignacian, several rich layers of Early, Middle, and Late Solutrean, and finally by Early Magdalenian. A number of radiocarbon dates are available, in the range c 20,000-16,000 BC for Solutrean and Initial Magdalenian levels. Numerous springs rise in the surrounding area, less than 100m from the site. The site is divided into two sectors: the western and eastern sectors, which are separated by a large area of unexcavated deposits.
