Kay Behrensmeyer Site - FxJj-1; KBS

Bryan/Gruhn Archaeology Collection Read more about this collection »

DescriptionA concentration of artifacts and faunal remains found in a shallow swale in tuff-choked channel surrounded by relatively flat, swampy floodplain; pollen suggests open grasslands and reed swamps with some gallery bush and trees. The swale is located on and in the KBS tuff at a point where the tuff outcrop forms a small saddle near the origin of a NE trending spur. The site was discovered in 1969 by Anna Kay Behrensmeyer. There are 12 geological units numbered 1-12. The site is 1km north of the Hippo and Artefact Site (FxJj-3). Artifacts include lithics such as cores, scrapers and flakes (for a complete list, see table 3.1 in publication) and faunal remains (see table 3.2 in publication). The area has a minimum diameter of 12-15m, so the artifact concentration is low.
