Distinguished from the former which has a 13-18 mm wingspan and a wide, yellow fringe; and from the latter which has a darker ground color and has a violet fringe.

Similar to Hypsopygia costalis and Dolichomia olinalis. A North American species known primarily from the northeastern United States and adjoining Canada west to British Columbia. Prentice et al. (1965) mapped its Canadian distribution. Reported in Alberta from Area 10 (Edmonton) by Bowman (1951) as Herculia thymetusalis. It has since been found in a number of other locations.
