IdentificationThis is the largest Alberta silphine and the only one with large eyes. Each elytron has a narrow posterior red fascia and sometimes traces of an anterior one as well. In moderate to large males the metafemora are swollen, with one or two preapical teeth; the metatibiae bear a preapical tooth; and the metatrochanters apically have an accessory spine, or are angulate.

This is the largest Alberta silphine and the only one with large eyes. Each elytron has a narrow posterior red fascia and sometimes traces of an anterior one as well. In moderate to large males the metafemora are swollen, with one or two preapical teeth; the metatibiae bear a preapical tooth; and the metatrochanters apically have an accessory spine, or are angulate.
Diet Info This species favours large pieces of carrion. Range This species occurs in the eastern U.S. and Canada and then west to the Pacific northwest. In Alberta it is found in the southern half of province with an extension to the northwest.
