Member of the adstrictus group, (subgenus Bothriopterus). Black, often faintly bronzed in males, elytra dull in females with slightly paler appendages. Rare reddish specimens collected as aberrations except in the Aleutian Islands where they are common. Prothorax with short and shallow, or no sinuation before the somewhat denticulate hind angles, reflection of sides more or lwss widening basad; latero-basal impression separated from side margin by a convexity that is little pronounced, or at least, does not form a direct continuation of the pronotal disc. Elytra with 5 or 6, rarely 4 dorsal punctures, more or less irregularly placed with foveate stria. Antennal cleaner of fore-tibia with 3 clip setae. Length 9.5 to 13 mm.
