Many species of moths have dull-looking forewings with patterns that act as camouflage, and brightly coloured hindwings that they flash when disturbed. This Io moth (Saturniidae: Automeris io) is displaying yellow hindwings that bear a pair of large eyespots. Perhaps the spots look a little like the eyes of a predator (an owl?) to an inquistive insectivorous bird. This individual was photographed at Queen's University Biological Station in Ontario.
