The larvae of Columbia Silk Moths, Hyalophora columbia (family Saturnidae), feed on tamarack, Larix sp. On the abdomen of one of the larvae (caterpillars) pictured, one can see the right five pairs of prolegs (four in the middle and the fifth on the posterior end). One can also see eight abdominal spiracles (white ovals between the rows of white tubercles). The spiracles allow entry of air into the tracheal system. The larvae cover themselves with silk before they moult into their pupal stage. This is called a cocoon. (Source: University of Alberta BioDiTRL online database, accessed Dec. 7, 2015.
