When Doug completed his doctoral program in Canterbury he was appointed to the Department of Entomology, University of Alberta. His interest in black fly biology, taxonomy, and larval feeding, directed him towards investigations of insect morphology. He has risen rapidly through the professional ranks and has received acclaim not only because of his excellent teaching of morphology and related topics, but also for his enthusiastic and critical research of insect structure and function. He has, by example, enticed many students into in-depth studies of the insect realm. Doug has published extensively on larval filter-feeding, homologies and fine structure of larval black fly labral fans, and the hydrodynamics of larval behavior. He has served as an Editor, Secretary-Treasurer, Director, and Archivist for the Entomological Society of Alberta.
