Exerpt from: Riegert, Paul W. Entomologists of Alberta. Entomological Society of Canada, 1989.

Being the son of an entomologist, Charley developed a keen interest in nature at an early age. His first job in professional entomology was summer work with the northern insect survey (1950 - 1953) and with Forest Entomology (1964 -1965). In the summers as well as obtaining his two post-graduate degrees- the theses research comprised ecological vegetation changes related to waterfowl habitat- he worked for the Canadian Wildlife Service. Charley joined the Department of Biology, University of Calgary, as a Professor of Botany in 1962; here he remained until he retired. Although his contribution to science has mainly been in botany, specifically bryology, he has also published extensively on birds, reptiles, butterflies and skippers, thus adding materially to our knowledge of the natural history of Alberta. He was an excellent teacher, herbarium curator, educational advisor, and editor. Although still active in natural history research, he is currently a rancher involved in improving methods of beef cattle production and range management.
