George has had an interest in insects, especially of ground beetles, since his early years and gained an international reputation for his research on the systematics, phylogeny and zoogeography of the Carabidae. Since joining the Department of Entomology, University of Alberta, he has risen through the professional ranks and served as chairman for 10 years since 1974, building an unrivaled reputation for the Department as a centre of excellence for insect systematic research. His more than 60 scientific publications, some being book-length treatises, are renowned for their significance to phylogenetic and biogeographic theory; more than 25 students from several countries have completed theses in systematics under his direction. He is a member of 15 entomological and biological societies, has served on a large number of scientific communities, and has held positions as President, Vice- President, and member of several committees of the Entomological Societies of Alberta and Canada. In 1980 George was awarded the gold medal of the Entomological Society of Canada.
