"Strick" was the first official entomologist of Alberta, sent west in 1913 to establish the Dominion Entomological Laboratory at Lethbridge, Alberta, and to find means of controlling the pale western cutworm. But entomology was laid aside for the duration of the First World War. After demobilization he investigated stored products insect problems for the federal Division of Entomology but also continued to keep an eye on field crop pests in Alberta. In 1922 he resigned from the federal service to establish the Department of Entomology, University of Alberta. As a one-man department he taught all the entomology courses and labs until joined by B. Hocking in 1946. He was active in the control of all economic insect pests of the prairies, wrote widely on the subject, and prepared bulletins and pamphlets for extension purposes. He was an avid collector leaving an enviable collection of insects as a legacy to his work. It also served as a foundation for the effective and distinguished teaching of systematic and economic entomology at the University he loved. He was the first President of the Entomological Society of Alberta.
