Bruce was born into an Entomological family thus his interest in insects could be considered as preordained. Immediately after completing his doctoral program in 1968, he joined the department of entomology, University of Alberta. Although he has a far-ranging general entomological interest, his area of expertise lies in insect morphology, especially that of thrips, bugs, and beetles. Bruce is probably the best known of the few remaining insect morphologists in Canada at the present time. His well-written papers and clear expressive illustrations attest to the high calibre of his work. He has taught insect development and general and applied entomology. In 1976, Bruce was awarded the C. Gordon Hewitt Award for entomological excellence, by the Entomological society of Canada. He served as president of the Entomological Society of Alberta in 1977.
