LeavesBroad; egg-shaped; 1-3 cm long; green or white patterened (Moss, 1983). Rosette; stem base (Johnson et al., 1995). FlowersOn slender stalk 10-20 cm tall; stalk glandular hairs; uncranced elongated inflorescence; matures bottom upwards (raceme); raceme one-sided; sepals and petals 3-5 mm long; anther is blunt (Moss, 1983). Flowers white to pale green; hooded; lower lip has deep pouch (Johnson et al., 1995). Fruits and SeedsCapsule; egg-shaped; 5-9 mm long; ascending; withered flower at tip; 200-400 seeds in each (Johnson et al., 1995).

2n=30 (28, 32) (Moss, 1983). In Alberta also known as Goodyera repens var. repens (Moss, 1983). This species can grow up to seven years before blooming; flowers are fragrant day and night (Johnson et al., 1995). As an alternative to seed reproduction, clones colonies are produced by spreading rhizomes (Johnson et al., 1995). Eastern Native peoples used this species in blood tonics, toothache remedies, cold medicine, to treat thrush, feminine problems, bladder problems, stomach diseases and snakebite; fresh or dried plants were used as a poultice on scratched, insect bites and burns; European settlers used the leaves to soothe mucous membrane and to treat tuberculosis (Johnson et al., 1995).
