Similar species: Young Maianthemum racemosum plants closely resemble members of the genus Veratrum, a highly toxic member of the Liliaceae family. Medical uses: Native peoples used the dry, grounded roots of M. racemosum as a powder that was applied to wounds to stop bleeding. The Thompson Indians used the leaves in a treatment for rheumatism, cancer, internal pains, pregnancy and menstrual pains, and sore throats. Ethno-botanical uses: The fruit is rich in vitamins with a bitter-sweet flavour and can be made into jellies or molasses or eaten raw. The young shoots can also be eaten and taste like asparagus.
Range/Distribution Alberta: widely distributed throughout all of Alberta CAN (BC, NT, SK); USA (AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, ND, NM, NV, OR, SD, TX, UT, WA, WY)
