Scientific Name Oplopanax horridus (Sm.) Miq. General Description

Devils club, as the name suggests, is armed with numerous, long, yellowish spines on the stems and leaves. The stem is quite springy, and when stepped on it bounces up quickly, lodging numerous spines in the back side of anything so foolish as to do so. It is a common plant at low to subalpine elevations in wet or moist forests. The bright red berries are inedible. Photographed near Nelson, B.C.
