Scientific Name Veratrum eschscholtzii (Roem. & Schult.) A. Gray Common Name green false hellebore General Description A tall (1-2 m) perennial herb that develops from a thick rootstock to have a leafy, slightly hairy stem that bears yellowish-green flowers (Moss, 1983). Leaves 10-20 cm long; oval in shape; sessile; often clasping stem; strongly veined (Moss, 1983). 5-15 cm wide; smaller and narrower at top; hairy beneath; margins entire; no basal leaves (E-Flora BC). Flowers Branched elongated inflorescence; drooping; tepals yellowish green; lance-shaped; 8-`0 mm long; attached to lower part of the ovary; 6 stamens opposite the tepals; ovary 3-lobed (Moss, 1983). Fruits and Seeds Capsule; egg-shaped; 2-2.5 cm long; many seeds (Moss, 1983). Phenology June to November (JSTOR). Notes 2n=32 (Moss, 1983). Also known as Veratrum viride or Veratrum viride var. eschscholtzii (Moss, 1983). Range/Distribution Alberta: SW in mountain range (Canadensys).
