LeavesSemi-transparent sheaths (Johnson et al., 1995). Bract-like (E-Flora BC).
FlowersUnbranched elongated inflorescence; flowers mature bottom upwards (raceme); raceme 5-20 cm long; 10-40 flowers; sepals and petals 6-9 mm long; lance-shaped; white; purple or red spots; white lip 6-8 mm long with purple spots; lip 2 lateral lobes and 2 ridges; yellow spur (Moss, 1983).
Fruits and SeedsCapsules; oval; 2 cm long; drooping; bear many seeds (Johnson et al., 1995).

A perennial saprophyte that grows from coral-like rhizomes to a height of 20-50 cm tall; bears purple, red or light yellow flowers (Johnson et al., 1995).

There is no chlorophyll in this species so it is not green; nutrients are obtained from dead organic matter through a relationship with fungi that grow in coniferous stands (Johnson et al., 1995). No roots, rhizomes instead that give a coral-like appearance (Johnson et al., 1995). SW Native people used the stems for a blood tonic to treat pneumonia; roots were used in a tea to increase sweating and expel intestinal worms (Johnson et al., 1995).
