The ta'arija is a cylindrical drum made of a hollow clay frame. A thin hide covers the wider end of the drum and is glued to the frame. A thread is stretched across the drum head and attached under the hide to create a snare, or buzzing effect when the drum head is struck. The clay body is decorated with glaze.
