The mbira has nine metal tongues which are stitched with copper wire onto a raised bridge mounted on a carved sounding board. Sound is produced when the metal tongues are plucked, and allowed to vibrate freely. This particular mbira was purchased by Dr. Burckhardt in Kinshasa, in 1977.
