17th century stumpwork box covered with silk embroidered with scenes from the biblical story of Joseph on the exterior. : The back shows Joseph raised from the will to be sold to Ishmaelites. This is done in flat…
17th century stumpwork box covered with silk embroidered with scenes from the biblical story of Joseph on the exterior. : The back shows Joseph raised from the will to be sold to Ishmaelites. This is done in flat counted stitching. The top of the box shows one of Josephs brothers bringing the blood stained coat of many colours to Jacob with the message of Josephs death; the right side of the box shows Joseph escaping from the wife of his master Potiphar; the left side of the box shows Joseph in prison, seemingly interpreting dreams of his fellow prisoners; The left door in the front shows Joseph greeting his father; the right door in the front shows Joseph with his brothers when they came to Egypt for food. The Lid of box opens to reveal slotted trays, the top one has inkwells. The central tray has print glued on the bottom showing Christ walking with to men (the walk to Emmaus?). The print has its top corners cut to fit the tray. Hinges for a mirror are still inside the lid. The doors at the front of box opens to reveal painted scenes from the biblical story of Moses (put in the river in a basket; Princess and lady in waiting approaching river) and gives access to 4 drawers. Lined with red silk, and paper.
