This print possess a characteristic Atelier 17 technique (multiple viscosity etching) developed by Stanley W. Hayter. In this technique, the printing plate is rolled with layers of progressively thinned ink over top of the initial wiped ink layer. This is a whimsical and cheerful composition in which white figures float throughout the warmly coloured background. Traditional Japanese colours and tones are used and the effect is that of a playful daydream or fantasy. The influence of the Fauves as well as the Fantasy artists of early 20th century France are evident. This work is a contemporary blend of Eastern and Western art and print making.
