A pioneer of the art of etching, Albrecht Dürer used iron for his printing plates, giving his etchings interesting characteristics of line arising from the less uniform texture of the metal. The Abduction of Proserpine is considered to be the most dramatic and inventive of Dürer's six experimental etchings, and is an excellent example of the range of linear expressivity and depth of tonal contrast that the medium offers.
