Haukaness was 59 years old and teaching at the Winnipeg School of Art when he painted 'Harvest Field'. During the previous summer he had apparently visited northern Manitoba; he spent his winter in Winnipeg.
Haukaness painted another work also entitled 'Harvest Field' in around the same year, without the figure in the foreground. This version was exhibited with the title 'Wheatfields' in the exhibition 'Painting in Alberta, an Historical Survey' at the Edmonton Art Gallery in 1980.
'Harvest Field' is related to an earlier work in the Norwegian-American Museum ('Sjur Regue Homestead') that also shows a reclining figure, somewhat flat in appearance, in a similar setting.
