A former pupil of famed British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, established British-Canadian artist Peter Hide is known for his abstract industrial scrap steel sculptures. Made from welded steel, Sculpture #1 (Greek) draws inspiration from classical freestanding Greek figures, also known as kouros, but in an abstracted modernist form.
In addition to referencing classical Greek art in his work, Hide’s practice also examines the relationship between architecture and human form - scale, material and form all contribute to how his work responds to its environment. Moreover, the prairie landscape and the “role of the province’s former steelworks industry in providing material and inspiration for his sculpture, before it began to decline in the 1970s.”
A professor in the Department of Art and Design, Hide came to teach at the University of Alberta in 1977. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous galleries including the Tate Gallery, Henry Moore Institute, and the Glenbow Museum among many others.
