Autumn in Haliburton by Group of Seven artist Franklin Carmichael offers a bucolic landscape scene. The oil on canvas painting depicts the rolling hills and the changing cloud-filled skies of the Haliburton region in Ontario. The muted colours in this work also help identify the seasonal changes of the image. Carmichael was born and raised in Orillia, Ontario, and spent considerable time observing the landscape in the region. One of his early teachers was most likely his father, a man who owned and operated a general blacksmith, carriage repair, and painting business.
While the Group of Seven have long been heralded as the vanguards of Canadian art, recent scholarship has challenged their depictions of unoccupied landscapes as Indigenous people continue to live on this land and have since time immemorial.
