Commissioned by the Alumni Association of the University of Alberta, this portrait of Chancellor Charles Allan Stuart (1864-1926) was painted by Frederick Horsman Varley in the spring of 1924. A companion piece to an earlier portrait of Henry Marshall Tory, painted by the same artist, this portrait of Chancellor Stuart was presented to the University at spring convocation in May, 1924. Varley, a founding member of the Group of Seven, worked as a portraitist during the early 1920s, prior to his tenure at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts.
Stuart served as the first Chancellor of the University of Alberta Senate from 1908 to 1926 and received an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University in 1915.
