Pangnirtung (Paroqtoq) is a community in Nunavut that was established with a Hudson Bay trading post in 1921. Pauloosie Karpik, who grew up in camps around Cumberland Sound, Baffin Island, Nunavut was one of the first inhabitants of the community. Before Karpik made a living as a carver and printmaker, he was a fox trapper and experienced the transition from a semi-nomadic lifestyle to permanent settlement firsthand. In the community’s arts co-operative print catalogue, he describes this image: “This would be a very good hunter, as his kayak is large, and covered by many skins. In the calm, after midnight, he is hunting for seal. Seals like to nap at that time, with their heads back in order to breathe. Because of the sound of the outboard motors, we can no longer hunt in this way.”
