"Checkpoint" is an example of the artist’s industrial cityscapes from the 1980s. These works reflect an unusual beauty in the decaying industrial environment of the city. “I've always loved architecture,” the artist has remarked. “The reason I moved to New York was that I loved the way the city looked—dramatic changes in scale, death and rebirth, the fantasy elements. These sites I go to, they're secret places, in a way. They embody the feeling of heroic fiction. Now there’s a kind of pathos about it, something very compelling. They're deteriorating.” (1)
