This portfolio contains prints that illustrate the story of Genji Monogatari (The tale of Genji; a novel in six parts, by Lady Murasaki), one of the world's oldest novels. Of the fifty-four chapters in this book, this portfolio contains illustrations for fifty-one. The three missing chapter illustrations are chapters 43 ("Kobai" or "Rose Plum"), 47 ("Agemaki" or "Trefoil Knots"), and 54 ("Yime no ukihashi" or "The Floating Bridge of Dreams").
