H. G. (Henry George) Glyde is well known for his simplified and rhythmical oil paintings of figures and landscapes. The harshness of Alberta's climate and the size and diversity of the terrain are themes present in many of his works.
Born in Luton, England, H. G. Glyde studied at the Brassy Institute in Hastings and the Royal College of Art in London. Arriving in Alberta at the age of 29, he taught and later became head of the Art Department at the Provincial Institute of Technology & Art (renamed the Alberta College of Art). He was head of the painting division at the Banff School of Fine Arts, taught for the Department of Extension at the University of Alberta, and served as volunteer advisor to the Cultural Affairs Branch of the Alberta Government. Glyde established the Art Department at the University of Alberta and was head of the Department of Fine Arts from 1947 until his retirement in 1966.
