Jack Bush gained considerable international recognition from the 1960s onward, and has been praised in particular for his talent as a colourist. The abstracted colour forms in Spread From Left were brushed onto the canvas with thinned acrylic paint, creating a stained effect which emphasizes the two-dimensional quality of the picture plane. The large areas of flat colour are themselves the subject of the painting. Spread From Left was the first purchase by the University of Alberta's Committee for the Purchase and Placement of Works of Art in 1971.
