Carol Sutton was born in Norfolk, Virginia, United States and currently lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. She is a contemporary abstract painter who often uses long and narrow rectangular canvases and expressive painting techniques. The diagonal lines and shapes in her work guide the viewer’s eyes around the canvas. Aqua Claudia, Across Campagna is part of a series of three paintings called the Set Cut series where the artist painted the canvas without painting to the edge to allow for a more unexpected look. Sutton occasionally uses architecture as a reference point to create an abstract painting. In this series, she is inspired by the bridge-type architecture of ancient Roman aqueducts as referenced by the title.
