The work was one of a collection purchased by the donor from a dealer after World War I. Known to be very old and valuable, the dealer claimed it had been given to a British diplomat who served in China in the early 19th century by an important person, possibly the Emperor himself. The work appears to have been executed by an artist trained in the Kano school style of painting. The University of Alberta is continuing to research the work.
