This print illustrates chapter 46, "Shii Ga Moto" in the novel "Genji Monogatari." There are three figures, one standing and two fumbling on the ground. One of these figures is face down, the other is looking at the standing figure. In this chapter, Kaoru and Niou visit the Uji princesses, daughters of Prince Hachi, who has renounced the world. He asks Kaoru to look after the girls when he is gone, and then dies. The title comes from the poem Kaoru recites in his honor:
"Beneath the oak I meant to search for shade
Now it has gone, and all is vanity."
