Early Snow was purchased directly from Jackson in 1949 at the recommendation of Glyde, who had moved to Edmonton in 1946 to head the Division of Fine Art at the University of Alberta. “For Jackson, part of the appeal of Southern Alberta was new subject matter. The vast landscape with its geographical peculiarities excited him. He was fascinated by the endless stretches of patterned fields that dropped abruptly into coulees. The sky seemed infinite with the horizon marked only by grain elevators.”¹ ¹ Joan Stebbins, A. Y. Jackson In Southern Alberta (Lethbridge: Alberta, Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Ronalds, Lethbridge, 1981), unpaginated.
