State 2 of 2 (from Danielle Siemens, AGA, 2020-01-06). In the years after 1630 Rembrandt drew a series of red chalk drawings of imposing old men. Some of these subjects were later used in paintings of biblical subjects or of meditating old men. Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap is one of several etchings closely linked to this series of chalk drawings. The old man here is likely the same model who sat for a number of figure studies of the same period. The plate used to print this etching was altered three times as it passed through the hands of a number of printers. It is likely that this print dates back to the 17th century and was printed from the second stage of the plate.¹ ¹Information in a letter to the University of Alberta, from A. V. Griffiths, The British Museum, London, June 22, 1977.
