Andrew Stewart (1904-1990) immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1929 where he attended the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He received his BSc in agriculture, as well as his MA in economics in 1932. Stewart moved to the University of Alberta in 1935 where he served as a lecturer and department head of Political Economy for over 20 years. In 1949, Stewart was named dean of Business Affairs, a new administrative position created to deal with the university’s growth. In 1950 he was installed as the University of Alberta’s fifth president.

Stewart presided over the university during its golden jubilee in 1958. Four special jubilee convocations were held in the newly completed Jubilee Auditorium, which was constructed for the province’s 50th anniversary. During Stewart’s term as president the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research was created and a graduate prize was named in his honour.

Stewart’s service to several provincial and national royal commissions led to his appointment in 1958, by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, to the position of chair of the first Board of Broadcast Governors, an independent regulatory body on Canadian broadcasting, which later became the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in 1968.
