This book is volume 26, part 1 of a 58 volume illustrated work written by Mantei Ōga (1818-1890). The books are about the "eight phases" or eight major events in the life of the historical Buddha Sakyamuni (c.566-486 BC). Volumes 1-23 in this work were illustrated by Toyokuni (1769-1825) and volumes 24-53 by Kunisada II (1823-1880).
