This stipple engraving is based on a classical story in Aelian’s Historical Miscellany (Book 13.33). The story involves a young maiden named Rhodope who has her slipper stolen by an eagle while taking a bath in the river. The eagle carries her slipper to Memphis and drops it into the lap of the surprised pharaoh, Psammeticus. Psammeticus is so enamored with the dainty shoe that he sends out a decree to find, and bring the owner of the slipper to the palace.
