Robert Sinclair typically works in series whereby an idea or even a set of variables within the larger theme, such as the 'road' paintings, is explored and developed. Sea of Roads, a recent donation to the University of Alberta Art Collection, It is from one of these series within the larger 'road' theme painted in the time frame of 1978 - 80. At this time Sinclair was struck with the notion that the sides of the roads were waves. To him it was if he was 'travelling in a boat' when he was driving through the countryside. This was very much a memory of the 'oceans of wheat blowing in the breeze' seen by Sinclair as a boy while growing up in Saskatchewan. The date of Sea of Roads is in the middle of this series, usually when Sinclair's work is usually the most resolved and aesthetically pleasing. This is a decisive work from the later years of this important period in Sinclair's career.
Another aspect of Sea of Roads that adds to its importance is the fact that it is in excellent condition. The acrylic varnishing technique for raw canvas and charcoal developed by Robert Sinclair for his paintings is evident in this work. This technique appears to have been used to perfection in this case, resulting in a work that has retained its clean and delicate surface.
