Nature of Matter is a mixed media installation that includes 30 prints, chestnut twigs, kelp roots, rocks, grass baskets and both real and cast painted eggs.
Lyndal Osborne comments that “this piece is about repetition and timelessness.” She goes on to explain: “The repetition of form is obvious when one collects and examines objects found in nature. I wanted to refer to how the objects might be discovered - half buried, obscured by tree foliage, scattered on the ground and floating or submerged in water. The structure and layering of the printed images emphasize this repetition - 100 forms are now multiplied to 600. Time is suggested by the sense of endlessness in the lithographed wall images. This is in counterpoint to the actual objects arranged in trays directly in front of the drawn forms. Here the natural world is presented with a sense of wonder and order, as it might be displayed in a museum collection.”
Osborne, now retired, taught printmaking at the University of Alberta from 1971 to 2001.
