This is plate 19 from a series of twenty-two illustrations created by Blake to depict the Book of Job and the story of one man’s conflict and relationship with God. The series was executed in the late years of Blake’s life. Blake was commissioned by a friend and fellow artist, John Linnell to produce a set of twenty plates from his earlier designs for a series about Job’s Captivity which were published in 1825(Raine 15). Blake had already created two series of water-colour drawings on the same theme for Thomas Butts and Linnell (Raine 25). This particular plate comes near the end of the Book of Job (Book of Job 42:11) and mirrors an earlier scene in which Job joylessly gives a loaf of bread to a beggar. In contrast, Job is surrounded by friends and family who come to share their wealth and good spirits with him and offer him comfort in his troubled times. Job, now through his many trials, sits in a landscape of plenty. He is bordered by lush field of wheat and sits underneath a fig tree bursting with fruit (Raine 250). The angels in the margins and the border also add to the impression of plenty as these flying women toss flowers from the folds of their clothing, while lush trees sprout along all sides of the border. The accompanying biblical quotes make reference to the idea that all gifts come from God (Raine 252). Sources: Raine, Kathleen. The Human Face of God: William Blake and the Book of Job.
